Forty-six Prince William County Public Schools are recipients of Best Practices in Nutrition and Physical Activity awards under Governor Timothy Kaine's Healthy Virginians Initiative. The award program, which is designed to encourage policies and practices on nutrition and physical activity, has schools tracking three trends, healthy lunches and breakfasts, vending options, and physical activity.
The awards, based on the Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard, are evidence of the schools’ commitment to practices that promote student health and enhance learning. The Scorecard is an assessment of the School Division’s implementation of the wellness policy adopted by the School Board in 2006. Best practices that promote physical activity and good nutrition are weighted with a point value of 10, 5, or 2 on the Scorecard. A school must have accumulated a minimum of 50 points from the physical activity section and 50 points from the nutrition section to be eligible for an award. Schools can receive awards at three levels; gold (200–180 points), silver (179–160 points), and bronze (159–140 points).
Two schools, Benton Middle School and HENDERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, received gold awards this year for promoting healthy foods, drinks, and snacks and encouraging regular physical activity during and outside of the school day. Only 13 schools have achieved gold awards since the program’s inception in 2005.
